The young face, passive; the eyes, so hungry for victory. At Ilia's triumphant debut in
the eligible world ('95 European Championship), we see a beautiful young skater comporting
himself with a maturity eons beyond his seventeen years. We see it all: the immaculate,
innate consciousness of place, the singular awareness of the entire body, the unteachable
sense of oneness with the ice. The figure skating world sees the effortless jumps,
weightless landings and unbroken flow and immediately begins marking stars beside his
name. Ilia slips noiselessly into the center of the sport to the wistful, far-off strains
of American in Paris. It is so poignant, so affecting to catch a glimpse of his hopeful
face as he opens the door to his future.
