Recitar !
Italian
Mentre preso dal delerio
non so piu quel che dico e quel che faccio
Eppure d'uopo sforzati
Bah, sei tu forse un uom
Te se Pagliaccio
Vesti la giubba e la faccia infarina
La gente paga e rider vuole qua
E se Arlecchin t'involva Colombina
Ridi, Pagliaccio, e ognun applaudira
Tramuta in lazzi lo spasmo ed il pianto
In una smorfia il singhiozzo e il dolore
Ah! Ridi, Paglaccio, sul tuo amore infranto
Ridi del duol che t'avvelena il cor.

Perform!
English
While on the point of collapse
Not knowing anymore what I say or do
I'll have to force it
Bah! I'll be a man
I'll be the clown
The show must go on, I wear a mask of flour
on my face
Because people pay to laugh
And though Harlequin runs off with Columbine,
Laugh, Clown, and everyone will clap.
Now you've swapped the faces of joy and tears
In one change, elation and despair
Ah, laugh, Clown, beneath your love's infidelity
Laugh about the greif you have hidden inside

The ultimate interpretation of
the most famous male aria "Vesti la Giubba" from Leoncavallo's opera, Pagliacci.
Ilia plays the part of Canio, a young actor whose heart had been broken by his wife's
infidelity. Despite his anguish, Canio must go onstage as the clown, Pagliaccio, and make
his audience laugh. Ilia's portrayal of the despairing lover is played with almost
tangible feeling. Through the vestiges of exquisite choreography, he takes us through the
painful stages of Canio's grief to his stalwart resolution to don the face of a clown and
hide his torment from the crowd. Vesti La Giubba! The Show Must Go On! The theatrics of
this program are peerless and the use of the traditional costume is ideal; the startling
contrast between the frivolous white half of love and the stark black half of desolation.
Ilia's performance of Vesti la Giubba is the most shining example to date of how to create
art on the ice; how skating is capable of bringing an audience to tears.
